My name is Jolijn Dellevoet, and since October 1st, I have joined CASA officially as a PhD candidate. I have a background in both mathematics and physics, which I combined in both my bachelor’s and master’s degree, here at TU/e. My master thesis first got me started in CASA, where Oliver Tse and Bjoern Baumeier were my mathematics’ supervisors. After that, I chose to do a PhD in the physics department, but my supervisor moved away, which gave me the opportunity to move to CASA. I will be working with Bjoern again to study the CISS effect in chiral crystals (I can tell you what those are later 😉 ), which is in collaboration with Shuxia Tao in the physics department. We will investigate the current machine learning methods, and try to improve or use them to our benefit to accurately describe the different interactions in a material. I have always enjoyed being a bridge between mathematics and physics, so I’m really happy that I can once again do that by joining CASA for this project.
